Lao Students Bring the Flavors of Their Homeland to the HCMC Open University Community

On December 8, Ho Chi Minh City Open University became more vibrant than ever as more than 80 Vietnamese and international students from Laos, Cambodia, Mongolia, France, and the Philippines gathered at the workshop “Cultural Colors – Flavors of Laos”. This event was not only a chance to experience Lao cuisine but also a meaningful cultural exchange among the university’s international student community.

The Taste of Laos in the Heart of Saigon

Under the skillful hands of international students, traditional dishes such as Lao Papaya Salad and Larb (minced meat with herbs) came to life, telling stories through their aromas, colors, and memories of home.

Participants were not only able to enjoy the dishes but also learned how to prepare them themselves, creating a lively and memorable cooking experience.

A Special Introduction from a Lao Student

At the beginning of the workshop, Fa Fah, a student from Laos, guided everyone through the cooking process, from preparing ingredients to adding the signature Lao seasonings. She also shared personal stories behind each flavor, helping others understand more about the culture and feelings tied to Lao food.

In those moments, cuisine became a “language” that connected people from different cultures.

When Students Become “Real Chefs”

After the demonstration, the groups entered a 60-minute cooking challenge. The atmosphere quickly became energetic and full of laughter.

Some groups carefully pounded the papaya to capture the strong, authentic flavor; others mixed herbs with great attention to detail for the Larb dish; and many tried their best to season the food so it tasted “just like Laos”.

The support team was always ready to assist, making the workshop full of energy and creativity.

Heartfelt Sharing from the Students

When the time was up, representatives from each group came forward to share their experience: the process of making the dishes, the cultural meaning behind each ingredient, the emotions they felt, and the small memories created during the workshop.

Many said it was their first time trying Lao cuisine, yet they felt a sense of familiarity in the mild spiciness, the fresh sour notes, and the simple, rustic way the dishes were prepared.

More Than Just a Cooking Workshop

“Cultural Colors – Flavors of Laos” was more than a cooking activity. It was a space where students learned about a culture through food, broadened their international perspectives, built friendships across countries, and created beautiful memories of their university years.

Beyond the taste of the dishes, it was the connection, the sharing, and the respect for each other’s cultures that made this event truly meaningful.
