On the afternoon of August 9, 2025, new international learners from Myanmar and the Philippines joined their first tour, “Vibrant Ho Chi Minh City” in Ho Chi Minh City – the place they will be attached to in the upcoming school years. This vibrant city exploration not only offered interesting cultural experiences but also sparked excitement and readiness for a new academic journey filled with opportunities in Vietnam.
The highlight of the program was a visit to 3 iconic landmarks of Ho Chi Minh City: Long Binh Metro Depot – the gateway to the modern metro line, City Theater Station – an architectural landmark in the center, and Nguyen Hue walking street – the vibrant heart of the young city. This trip also provides a practical experience of modern public transportation. It was also an opportunity for international learners to get acquainted with the pace of city life and gain a deeper understanding of the culture, people, and vibrant lifestyle of Vietnam in the years ahead.
Exploring the “Home” of Saigon Metro at Long Binh Depot
The trip began at the Long Binh Metro Depot. This is the central hub for the trains of Ho Chi Minh City’s Metro Line 1. With the support of skilled technicians, learners gained a deeper understanding of the intricate processes of train maintenance, repair, and operation, which gave them valuable insights into the city’s transportation infrastructure.
Following the depot visit, participants embarked on an exciting ride aboard the metro. Laughter and chatter filled the air, and excitement on everyone’s faces as the train glided smoothly, taking them to their next destination.
City Theater Station: A Blend of Heritage and Modernity
The trip continued at the City Theater Station, which opened up a picture of a delicate combination of fusion of historical charm and contemporary design. This is not only a stop on the metro line, but also the door leading to the iconic Ho Chi Minh City Opera House, an architectural masterpiece that has embodied Saigon’s rich history and artistic legacy for over a century.
Participants also captured memorable moments through photographs, soaking in the intricate details of the architecture — both majestic and timeless, yet vibrant and approachable. Just steps away lies Nguyen Hue Walking Street, a lively hub of colorful street performances and cultural activities. In the midst of the young and dynamic atmosphere, participants strolled through the heart of the city, listening to stories about President Ho Chi Minh, the revered leader of the Vietnamese nation.
Discovering the City Aboard a Double-Decker Bus
Leaving Nguyen Hue Walking Street behind, the group continued their adventure on a double-decker bus, a popular way to explore the city among both locals and international visitors. From the elevated vantage point, students took in iconic landmarks, such as the Independence Palace, Notre-Dame Basilica, and the Bitexco Financial Tower,…
From this perspective, the city revealed its multifaceted character—modern and bustling, yet deeply rooted in history. Gentle breezes and vibrant street scenes below enhanced the experience, making the ride both exhilarating and unforgettable. This is also the moment when participants interact through conversations and foster bonds more after common experiences.
Ending the trip with traditional Pho flavor
To conclude a day filled with exciting activities, international learners were taken to Pho Viet Nam restaurant in Xuan Hoa Ward, Ho Chi Minh City.
A steaming bowl of fragrant, delicious pho recharged their energy while offering a quintessential Vietnamese culinary experience. For many learners, this was their first time savoring this iconic dish in its homeland, creating an unforgettable memory.
Ho Chi Minh City Open University hopes that through these immersive trips, international learners not only discover the beauty, vibrancy, and history of the city but also experience the warmth and hospitality of the Vietnamese people. Each destination and activity carries its own unique beauty, leaving participants with cherished emotions and meaningful insights. This trip will be regarded as a meaningful starting point, fostering a deeper connection to the city where they will live and study in the upcoming years.
