A Connection Trip Welcoming New International Students of Ho Chi Minh City Open University 2025

On the afternoon of August 9th, 2025, new international students and trainees from Myanmar and the Philippines took their first city tour of Ho Chi Minh City – the place they will call home during their upcoming academic years. This journey to explore the vibrant city not only offered exciting cultural experiences but also sparked eagerness, preparing them for a new educational path filled with opportunities in Vietnam.

International learners joyfully took photos, ready for the journey ahead.

The highlight of the program was a journey to explore three landmarks in Ho Chi Minh City: Long Binh Metro Depot – the gateway to the modern metro line; Opera House Station – an architectural landmark in the heart of the city; and Nguyen Hue Walking Street – the vibrant heart of this young metropolis. Notably, the trip provided practical experiences on modern public transport, helping them not only familiarise themselves with the city’s pace of life but also gain a deeper sense of the culture, people, and dynamism of the place that will accompany them in the coming academic years.

Exploring the “home” of Saigon Metro at Long Binh Metro Depot:

The trip’s opening activity was at Long Binh Metro Depot. This is the gathering point for the train sets of the city’s Metro Line 1. With on-site technical support, the learners listened and observed to better understand the maintenance, repair, and operation processes for the train lines, gaining deeper insights into the city’s transport infrastructure.

Opera House Station: A harmony of tradition and modernity

Continuing the journey, the group stopped at the Opera House Station, where a refined blend of ancient charm and modern vitality unfolded. This is more than just a stop on the metro line; it is a gateway to the Ho Chi Minh City Opera House, an architectural landmark steeped in the historical and artistic heritage of Saigon for over a century.

Here, learners were free to capture memorable moments through their lenses, feeling the sophistication of every architectural detail at once contemplative and majestic, yet vibrant and approachable. Just a few steps away lies Nguyen Hue Walking Street, a colourful boulevard and a hub for unique street cultural and artistic activities. In this youthful and bustling atmosphere, learners not only strolled to enjoy the city centre’s pulse but also listened to and shared meaningful stories about President Ho Chi Minh, the beloved leader of the Vietnamese people.

Sightseeing the city by double-decker bus

Leaving the walking street, the group continued their exploration on a double-decker bus – a sightseeing format that is highly popular among both international tourists and locals. From the elevated vantage point, students could take in a panoramic view of Ho Chi Minh City’s iconic landmarks, including Independence Palace, Notre-Dame Cathedral, and Bitexco Financial Tower…

From this perspective, the city appears with many facets – both modern and bustling, yet still preserving historical imprints. The cool breezes, combined with the busy street scenes below, made the bus ride even more enjoyable and memorable. This was also a moment for the group members to interact, chat, and bond further after their shared experiences.

Wrapping up the journey with the traditional flavour of Pho

Ending a day filled with exciting activities, the international learners were taken to a restaurant named Phở Việt Nam in Xuan Hoa Ward, Ho Chi Minh City.

A steaming, delicious bowl of Phở provided a boost of energy and offered a unique culinary experience. For many, this was their first time enjoying this famous dish in its homeland, creating unforgettable memories.
