April 23, 2025, marked a significant milestone in the 35-year development journey of Ho Chi Minh City Open University, as the prestigious Times Higher Education (THE) University Rankings announced its results, recognizing the university among the top 501–600 universities in Asia for 2025.
Among the nine Vietnamese universities featured in the rankings, Ho Chi Minh City Open University’s first-time inclusion and strong performance represent a major advancement compared to the previous year.
Universities participating in this ranking are evaluated based on 18 specific indicators grouped into five main categories: Research Quality (30%), which includes citation impact, research strength, research excellence, and research influence; Research Environment (28%), focusing on research reputation, research income, and research productivity; Teaching (24.5%), which assesses the teaching reputation, staff-to-student ratio, doctorate-to-bachelor’s ratio, doctorates-awarded-to-academic-staff ratio, and institutional income; Industry (10%) which includes industry income and patents; and International Outlook (7.5%), which considers the proportions of international students, proportion of international staff, and international collaboration.
The achievement of being ranked in the 501–600 group in Asia demonstrates that Ho Chi Minh City Open University has made significant improvements and recorded positive results across most evaluation criteria. Notably, according to THE’s announcement, the University also stood out by ranking first among Vietnamese universities in the category of “Gender Equality” and second in “Faculty Efficiency”. These distinctions underscore the University’s dedication to addressing social issues and its efforts to optimize resources, delivering high-quality education to learners. In particular, the implementation of various scholarship programs to encourage female students to pursue studies in engineering, science, and technology is a concrete testament to this commitment.
This achievement is not only a source of pride for the entire community of staff, lecturers, employees, and students of Ho Chi Minh City Open University, but also serves as a positive signal of the robust development and strong potential for international integration of Vietnam’s higher education sector.
Previously, Ho Chi Minh City Open University was also ranked among the top 1201–1500 universities worldwide according to the Times Higher Education (THE) World University Rankings 2025. The University’s consistent improvements and strong performance in prestigious international rankings demonstrate that it is on the right track in enhancing teaching quality, promoting research, and strengthening global partnerships.
