On August 14 and 17, 2026, Center for Vietnam – Japan Educational and Cultural Exchange organized the program “Vietnam – Okinawa Peace and Cultural Exchange through Bingata Art, Calligraphy, and Ryukyu Dance” at Ho Chi Minh City Open University.

The event welcomed a visiting delegation from Okinawa alongside numerous university faculty members and students. Aiming to strengthen cultural exchange and promote mutual understanding between Vietnam and Japan, the program offered a lively, immersive space for students to learn about Okinawa’s history, culture, and distinct identity. Through traditional art forms, narratives of memory, war, peace, and human connection were conveyed in a visual and emotionally resonant manner.
A key highlight was Bingata – Okinawa’s traditional stencil-dyeing and textile craft. Students were introduced to its signature characteristics, the creative process, and works by artisan Michiko Taira, gaining deeper insight into the aesthetic and cultural depth of this heritage craft. Additionally, students engaged in hands-on calligraphy guided by Ms. Sachiko Sakai and enjoyed a Ryukyu dance performance by artist Haruka Shingaki.
The harmonious blend of music, traditional costumes, and expressive movements highlighted the unique beauty of Okinawa’s performing arts. Picture books were another significant feature of the activities. Japanese Language students staged a reading of the work “Princess Anio”, presenting history and culture through dynamic, visual storytelling.

On this occasion, the Allen Okinawa Scholarship Fund donated sets of Bunagaya picture books in both Japanese and Vietnamese to Ho Chi Minh City Open University. Translator Nguyễn Đỗ An Nhiên also presented 14 Vietnamese-translated books. Participating students received Bunagaya books, gaining valuable learning materials to explore Okinawan culture and language further.

Through this initiative, Center for Vietnam – Japan Educational and Cultural Exchange continues to act as an active bridge for international exchange, fostering cultural appreciation and open-mindedness among students. The artistic activities, literature, and direct dialogue with Okinawan guests brought Japanese culture closer to Vietnamese youth while reinforcing the friendship and mutual understanding between both nations.
