June 5th every year is an important milestone for the international community in the journey of environmental protection, and it also serves as a strong reminder of each individual’s responsibility toward our green planet. On the occasion of World Environment Day 2026, Ho Chi Minh City Open University (HCMCOU) continues to affirm its commitment to building a sustainable campus environment, spreading a powerful message of action to all Vietnam and international students.

Climate Change – A Present Global Challenge
Climate change is occurring at a faster pace than predicted and is directly impacting the survival of all nations. We are no longer facing the risks of 50 or 100 years from now. At this very moment, humanity is continuously witnessing extreme weather events: record heatwaves scorching many regions, widespread wildfires, unusual storms and floods, prolonged droughts, and rising sea levels.
In Vietnam, the consequences are becoming increasingly apparent. Coastal provinces are struggling with the severe impacts of saltwater intrusion and coastal erosion; the Central region frequently faces extreme typhoons. Meanwhile, major cities continuously record severe air pollution and flooding due to erratic weather patterns.
Climate change has now gone beyond the macro narrative of the environmental sector to become a direct threat to the livelihoods and health of every individual. Taking climate action has become a vital responsibility of all humanity.
World Environment Day 2026: An Urgent Call to Action from the United Nations
In 2026, the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) launches World Environment Day with the theme “A Global Call for Climate Action.”
This message emphasizes the power of collective effort. Every action, no matter how small, if taken by billions of people, will create an enormous impact. From saving electricity and refusing single-use plastics to prioritizing public transportation or participating in volunteer activities—all are indispensable pieces in the puzzle of protecting the Earth.
Youth: The Pioneering Force Spreading Sustainable Lifestyles
In response to World Environment Day 2026, a series of practical activities are being implemented to spread the “green living” spirit. At HCMCOU, students are proving their pioneering role through everyday habits:
- Conscious Consumption: Using personal water bottles and canvas bags instead of plastic bags; supporting eco-friendly products and practicing sustainable fashion.
- Minimizing the “Carbon Footprint”: Turning off electrical appliances when not in use, cleaning up digital data to reduce server loads, and increasing the use of public transportation.
- Community Action: Actively participating in waste cleanup campaigns, planting trees to green the campus, and using social media to promote knowledge about source separation of waste.
Furthermore, students are constantly encouraged by the university to participate in environmental debate competitions and collaborative projects with reputable organizations, helping them hone critical thinking and many valuable soft skills.
Multicultural Connection: The Common Voice of the Global Student Community on Campus
Besides the effort to inspire green living among domestic students, HCMCOU is proud to become a miniature “global eco-village.” The wave of climate action at the university is receiving incredibly strong support and participation from the international student community studying here.
This very cultural exchange has brought an invaluable source of energy. International students have brought sustainable development mindsets from their home countries – such as a strict waste-sorting culture, a zero-waste lifestyle, or green initiatives – to share with Vietnamese students. The love for the Earth has become a common language, erasing all geographical boundaries and language barriers.
For international students, participating in environmental activities on campus carries a dual significance: both fulfilling the responsibilities of a “Global Citizen” and opening up opportunities to deeply integrate into the local community, make new friends, and leave positive marks in Vietnam.
This cohesion has proven a truth: Climate change knows no borders, and neither does climate action. No matter where you come from, when studying together under this school’s roof, we are all part of the solution.
