On 16/12/2017, the Ministry of Education and Training, in collaboration with the Ministry of Science and Technology, Ho Chi Minh Central Communist Youth League, the Union of Vietnam Scientific and Engineering Society, held the closing ceremony and awarded National student scientific research prizes in 2017.

The theme “The legal view conflict between unforeseen happenings and conditions for applying self-defence measures” by Ngô Quỳnh Giao, Nguyễn Cao Nguyên and Phạm Văn Vinh, students of Law Faculty, Ho Chi Minh City Open University, was awarded the First Prize, excellently outdone thousands of scientific research themes by students from 77 universities, institutes all over the country. Besides, 2 second prizes, 2 third prizes and 4 consolation prizes are also awarded to HCMC Open University students, who come from Special Training Faculty (1 second and 1 consolation), Construction and Electrical Engineering (1 second), Biotechnology (1 Third and 1 Consolation), Information Technology (1 Third), Financial- Banking (1 Consolation), Sociology-Social Welfare-Southeast Asian Study (1 Consolation). 

With the above achievements, HCMC Open University was ranked fifth nationally and the Department of Scientific Management & Cooperation received Certificate of Merit for its outstanding achievements in holding student scientific research in 2017. 

The National Scientific Research Prize has become an intellectual playground for university students nationwide. The prize aims to involve and encourage students in scientific study, promoting creative thinking ability, and employing knowledge in practice, contributing to improve the quality of college training.
