Law was first taught at the Open University of HCM City in 1993. However, due to the State’s policies at that time, it was closed three years after that. In 2009, the Open University reopened law education by offering undergraduate courses of commercial law under the administration of the Faculty of economics and law.
On 10 September 2015, the Faculty of law was established on the basis of Decision No.1328/QD-ĐHM-2015 signed by the Rector of the Open University of HCM City, which split the Faculty of Economics and Law into two separate faculties: the Faculty of Law and the Faculty of Economics and Public Management.
Since then, the Faculty of law has offered undergraduate law courses specified in commercial law, civil law and Administrative Law. Approximately, four hundred on-campus students and five thousand distance-learning students enroll yearly. Since August 2016, the Faculty of law has also offered postgraduate courses in commercial law with approximate fifty students enrolling yearly.
The Faculty of Law has four departments: Department of Civil Law; Department of Commercial law, Department of Private International Law - International business law and Department of Administrative Law.
Courses
Currently, the Faculty of law offers first-degree courses which lead to two kinds of BA degree: BA degree in Commercial Law and BA degree in Law (specified in either civil law or Administrative Law). To obtain one of these BA degree, students have to complete at least the minimum credits required by the curriculum (125-126 credits), which usually takes three and half to four years of full time study. Students may also obtain two degrees if they can complete the required credits for graduation of the two curricula, which will take some more time. The curricula offer compulsory courses and optional courses.
Teaching law at the Open University is intended to give a thorough grounding in the principles of law, technique, reasoning and explanation. Students have opportunities to study with academic lecturers and work with practical experts both at classroom and at work. Extra-curricular activities are also provided to help students to improve their soft skills by taking part in social activities, sport, events, academic contests, research… (please see the English translation of the BA’s curricula attached below)
LL.M program in commercial law is offered for postgraduate students. This two-year program is currently only offered for Vietnamese students since all the courses are taught in Vietnamese. Unlike undergraduate students, postgraduate students most of the time study at classroom and library.(please see the English translation of the LLM.’s curriculum attached below)
