On the morning of June 13, Ho Chi Minh City Open University happily celebrated the 30th Anniversary of its founding (1990–2020) with the presence of the Minister of Education and Training, Ho Chi Minh City authorities, representatives of departments and businesses who are partners with the school.

Founded in 1990 and became a state university in 2006, Ho Chi Minh City Open University, the first university in Vietnam operates under the state regulations and applies ‘open’ training approach. This significantly contributes to the implementation of the policy of education socialization, and helps meet the increasing demand of high quality human resources in modern society. At that time, the establishment of Ho Chi Minh City Open University was the result of persistent innovating itself towards cognitive change in education development to form a type of school satisfying educational needs in “open” conditions. As a result, the school is able to bring the knowledge in the fields of science, technology, and humanities to a wide range of learners who are from urban, mountainous, remote and island areas.

Since then, Ho Chi Minh City Open University has confirmed its position in the Vietnamese higher education system, which is a multidisciplinary and multi-level university. The school's faculties has been gradually meeting the demands of society. At the moment, the university has 12 faculties, 24 undergraduate majors and 7 disciplines that have offered high quality training in all three fields of economics, engineering and humanities. Approximately 30,000 students are currently studying at different levels from bachelor to master and doctorate. The University's campuses and academic partnerships are located throughout the country.

While delivering speech at the ceremony, Deputy Minister of Education and Training - Assoc.  Dr. Nguyen Van Phuc suggested that the school should keep up its current achievements including promoting the development of international standard programs; consolidating scientific research, creating appropriate mechanisms to maintain and attract talents; incorporating research-application-transfer with localities, businesses…  In order to achieve those goals, the school must form internal solidarity with great aspirations shared.... On this special occasion, 18 collectives of Ho Chi Minh City Open University were also awarded awarded certificates of merit by the Ministry of Education and Training.

After 30 years of establishment and development, the University has gained more and more remarkable achievements including always being in the top 10 ranking of schools belonging to the Ministry of Education and Training that has scientific research achievements; the number of articles published in prestigious wordwide journals written by lecturers and students increasing; international cooperation strongly developing, which is ready for extensive international integration.

The university's orientation to 2024 will be to become a multi-disciplinary, multi-level and multi-form higher education institution providing quality training programs, international integration, meeting the needs of society and the economy on the basis of high-tech applications. In addition, the school is determined to vigorously develop scientific research activities with the goal of contributing knowledge, improving the quality of training and social cohesion, following the strategy of key investing which is effective and closely connected to the line-up development.
