On April 7, 2022, the prestigious Spanish ranking organization for scientific research institutions – SCImago - announced the results of the ranking of research institutions (research institutes, universities) in the world. Accordingly, Ho Chi Minh City Open University increased 24 places, ranked 325th (compared to 349th position in 2021) out of 1,485 universities and research institutes in Asia; and ranked 14th out of 24 universities in Vietnam.

SCImago was established since 2009 and is published annually by the Spain-based research organization SCImago consisting of 3 key members: Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas (CSIC), University of Granada, Extremadura, Carlos III (Madrid) and Alcalá de Henares. The purpose of this ranking is to provide information on scientific research performance of countries, research institutions; evaluate the Journal Prestige based on the Scopus database.

In 2021, SCImago ranks research institutions in the world based on 03 criteria: Research efficiency (50%): based on the Output, Excellence and Normalized Impact of the institutions; Innovation achievement (30%) which is calculated by the number of patent applications and the total output in the areas cited in patents; Social impact association (20%) based on the number of pages associated to the institution’s URL, number of Backlinks and discussions on social media. SCImago 2022 ranking results affirm HCMCOU’s adequate and effective development strategy in all three aspects: scientific research, innovation and social impact.

This result also indicates the orientations of developing diversity training methods (formal, distance, learning while working, online); training levels from undergraduate to postgraduates (master and doctoral); various fields (Economics, Business Administration, Foreign Languages, Social, Engineering, IT, etc.; variety of training programs including 27 programs, 11 advanced programs. and many International Affiliate programs with Flinders University, Bond University - Australia, Rouen University - France which open up many opportunities for learners such as Big data , International Business, Management & Innovation, Marketing, Human Resource Management, English Linguistics, International Trade, etc. The school has been continuously awarded many Certificates from the Ministry of Education and Training, the Ho Chi Minh City and other provincial People's Committees for significant contributions to the community, co-hosted various seminars, contributed ideas on social policies to provide the urgent socio-economic responses -  bridged the gaps between policy makers, academia and businesses.
