Volunteering for a Greener Environment: The Story of Three International Students at Ho Chi Minh City Open University

Date: (20/09/2024)

Cần Giờ, a region boasting a diverse ecosystem and pristine beauty, is gradually facing the pressing issue of waste pollution. On the morning of May 12, 2024, a group of young people, particularly three international students from Cambodia, have united to take concrete action. Sadet, Chhin Sea, and Kimfah, dedicated volunteers of the Beach Clean Up campaign organized by Ho Chi Minh City Open University, are at the forefront of this initiative.

With a strong desire to contribute to marine environmental protection, they actively participated in the beach cleanup campaign. Beyond a mere cleanup activity, this initiative served as an opportunity to promote environmental awareness among the community, especially the youth.

Chhin Sea, a tall young man with bright eyes from Cambodia, has always been enthusiastic about volunteer work. He shared, "We, the youth, are not only victims of climate change but also agents of positive change. As an international learner studying in Vietnam, I aim to inspire young people in both Vietnam and my home country, Cambodia, to protect the environment. This not only safeguards nature but also boosts tourism and brings economic benefits to our countries."

Unlike the beautiful beaches she had visited before, Kimfah, also from Cambodia, expressed surprise upon her first visit to Can Gio beach. "I couldn't believe such a beautiful beach could have so much trash. I am grateful for the opportunity to have participated in this program and would encourage others to get involved in similar initiatives. By taking small steps, we can all contribute to a healthier and more sustainable planet."

"Participating in the Beach Clean Up campaign was a truly rewarding experience. Not only did I have the opportunity to contribute to a cleaner environment, but I also learned valuable lessons about teamwork and the importance of community involvement. It's exciting to see so many people come together for a common purpose", Sadet expressed his enthusiasm as he looked back at the beach.

Although coming from different cultures, all three felt incredibly excited to work together on a meaningful cause. They believe that their small actions will contribute to making the beach cleaner and inspire many others to join hands in protecting the environment.
